Research at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) is pursued within the three major areas of genomics, biochemistry and molecular cell biology, immunology and microbiology. This categorization has a historical and organizational background, with numerous active scientific exchanges and collaborations between the three sections.

In addition, much of the research is interdisciplinary in character and involves collaboration with other departments at Uppsala University and other universities. Core facilities for proteomics and transgenic animals are present at IMBIM.
